Calling all young ins! Come one come all!! I want to have a quick little chat with you all. I bet most of you have graduated with a respectful degree and are searching and handling our resumes like candy, right? And most of you are struggling to get that perfect job you have had your heart set on since you were a baby. Most of you probably are thinking gramps in the back needs to go so you can sneak in and assume the position he has worked for the last 40 years. Any of this sound familiar?

Sorry boys and girls. Welcome to the real world. In today’s society, if you want to have a grown up job, you need to start at the bottom and work your way up. You do not get to jump head first into a career that you have just gained a degree in. You have no experience. Loving your career choice and actually living that choice are two separate entities that take time to merge together. The best thing you as a young worker can do is this, 1. Go to college and get a degree in the field of your choice, but do not go overboard and go all the way up the educational ladder just yet. Start at the bottom. Get your basic degree. 2. Set out and find your dream job. It may be an entry-level position, but hey you have to start somewhere, right? 3. Once you have your foot in the door, go back to school to attain a higher position in the job you love so much and go for gold!

“The deontologist argues that we have a duty, or an obligation, to treat other people with respect; human beings have dignity, and we must take that dignity intoconsideration when dealing with them” (Mosser 2013).  You as “young” new workers must treat our “older” experienced workers with adoration and show homage to them as you enter into their workplace.  There is plenty of room for both youthful and seasoned workers alike.  We need to learn how to survive together and include new ideas and respect the ideals that are already implemented.

Young and older generations can cohabitate the work place, we just need to find a happy medium and learn to work together.  “When the old are not allowed to tell their story, the young grow up without history. When the young are not listened to, we lose unique ideas and have no future” (Hagestad 1999).
