Evidenced-Based practice (EBP) is described as a problem-solving approach that integrates evidence assembled from studies and experiences of medical professionals (Wallis, 2012). EBP helps nurses make solid clinical judgments to deliver the best patient care and clinical outcomes.

There are several barriers to implementing EBP. The two most often mentioned are lack of time and support from health organization (Wallis, 2012). As Wallis (2012) explained, resistance from nurse staff begins with the nurse managers and nurse leaders, which should not be the case if we want to implement EBP. Nurse leaders and managers are often looked to for support when the time comes for making changes about practice, policies or procedures. They are expected to be role models and a source of support (Wallis, 2012).

One strategy that should be utilized to overcome these barriers is to “strengthen beliefs about the benefits of EBP” (Melnyk, 2002, p. 151). Education is an indispensable tool as it will help nurse leaders and nurses become more familiar and increase their knowledge about EBP.

A second important strategy to decrease the barriers to implementing EBP is to create a culture in which it is strongly valued (Melnyk, 2002). It is vital that the staff understands and appreciates the value of EBP as this can make implementation easier. Furthermore, the support and encouragement of administration is the key element for success in implementing EBP (Melnyk, 2002).
