Exploration of stressful psychological and environmental factors among the patients in hospitals at Jeddah / Saudi Arabia Table of Contents Introduction Health is state of complete physical, mental and social wellbeing not merely the absence of disease or infirmity .The individual is treated in a holistic manner and realize his basic needs according to the basis of Maslow’s theory of motivation that consist of physiological needs, safety and security, social needs, esteem needs, self-actualizing. Needs at the bottom of pyramid are basic physical requirements include the need for food, air, water, and sleep. Once these lower-level needs have been met, people can move on to the next level of needs. Maslow’s hierarchy needs – the peak performance center ) Good health and wellbeing require a clean and harmonious environment in which physical, psychological, social factors are all given their due importance .The process of hospitalization is a very traumatic .People have to move their life setting from the familiar to unfamiliar environment, loosing their privacy, and sense of security and individuality. The strangeness of the hospital environment can act as a potential source of stress.( Stress among patient during hospitalization : a study from central India). Causing of the stress is may be psychological (surgery, illness, death, separation, divorce, failure),and the patient may face many psychological stress in the hospital Such as preoperative stress is present in most patients who are awaiting elective surgery, which has the potential to exceed their coping mechanisms. The anticipation of pain after surgery, separation from loved ones, incapacitation, loss of independence, fear of surgery or death are factors that trigger symptoms of perioperative emotional stress. So far, studies have addressed the impact of psychological, psychosocial and personality factors on several health indices.( Development, psychometric evaluation and validation of a brief measure of emotional preoperative stress) While in hospital patients spend a great deal of time with perhaps rather less purpose than in their normal lives. This may well make them even more susceptible to the environment and more sensitive to it. A patient in hospital may get the personal attention of a doctor for only a few minutes in a day and slightly longer periods of personal care from nurses and therapists. However they lay in bed, sit, get pushed or walk around in their environment for many hours. It is reasonable therefore to assume that this environment may be a contributory factor to their sense of well-being and actual recovery. Over a century ago Florence Nightingale had noted the importance of their surroundings to her patients (Nightingale 1860). This work explores those ideas empirically.
