In our world today, diversity is needed in this global economy. Everyone should be recognized for their unique background.  Does it have a place everywhere?  Pluralism has a place in a wide range of places. Diversity belongs in society, ethics, education, politics, ethnic relations, and legal reform. Pluralism has a place everywhere.  Can you think of a place it doesn’t belong?  I believe that our society has no place for extremist cults. Considered that with pluralism we need to respect diversity, one does not have to go against their moral code and respect an extreme cult.   Do you think that our government still uses pluralistic principles?  I do believe that our government still uses pluralistic principles. Many lawmakers are open-minded when faced with ethical views.    How did the debate alter your view on that?  The US is a country that is always changing for the better. Our constitution got amended to allow human rights and voting rights. Though views may differ, I believe that it is a part of the growth process for many to contradict other beliefs.  Did you witness pluralism in Station Eleven or Beauty Salon?  In Station Eleven I noticed that Raymond mentioning ” Some towns are easier to visit than others. Some places have elected mayors or they’re run by elected committees. Sometimes a cult takes over, and those towns are the most dangerous.” To me those towns with elected representitves is a clue that pluralism exists.    Reference MANDEL, E. M. I. L. Y. S. T. J. O. H. N. (2014). Station eleven. ALFRED A. KNOPF.  Cole’s post Hello Class, 1. My thoughts on pluralism are that it is a great concept to let every group feel included even minorities as long as it is implemented correctly.   2. I believe pluralism does have a place in society just not everywhere. as long as its implementation does not undermine its original goal of consensus. Everyone’s voice should be heard but not at the cost of others. if 9 people say the sky is purple and the 10th says it is blue you cannot say we all agree the sky is purple. there can be a majority opinion but not a shutdown of the minorities’ opinion.    3. I believe pluralism does not have a place in an individual’s decision-making. You should not dictate how someone lives or the choices they make. an example of this would be people can come to a consensus on the moral right or wrong on a topic but it is still an individual’s free will to engage in that topic like abortion.     4. I originally would have said no but now that I have had time to think about it and understand it I believe that the government still uses pluralistic principles like the electoral college or even just the division of power in the United States government.   5. I initially believed that the government did not use any pluralistic points of view but after listening to the debate I was completely wrong. The electoral college is formed on the principles of a pluralistic point of view so that no matter what the popular vote is the people who are a part of the minority still have a voice in who is the president.     6. I witnessed pluralism in Station eleven. With this quote from when they are arriving at St. Deborah.“I’d suggest Lear for tonight,” said Sayid, an actor, “but I don’t know that we want to make this place more depressing.” “For once I agree with you,” Kristen said. The other actors were arguing. King Lear, because they’d been rehearsing it all week august looked nervous–or hamlet, because they hadn’t performed it in a month?”(John Mandel, Pg:44) The quote from station eleven shows the pluralism shown in which multiple people come together to decide which play is performed.   References MANDEL, E. M. I. L. Y. S. T. J. O. H. N. (2014). Station eleven. ALFRED A. KNOPF.  Jeannie’s post What are your thoughts on pluralism? Pluralism is a good thing. I am an army brat. I have been surrounded by military members most of my life. As some of you may know the military is very diverse. You meet so many people from different backgrounds, regions, ethnicities, and religions. It’s eye-opening and fascinating. It’s the best example of pluralism I have experienced, and I find that each person has something unique that you can learn from. Does it have a place everywhere? To be honest I am not sure. One definition I found of religious pluralism states that it accepts multiple paths to God or gods. If this is the definition, then it is incompatible with my Christianity. Christianism teaches there is only one God. (Houdmann) However, in another definition, “it is the state of being where every individual in a religiously diverse society has the rights, freedoms, and safety to worship, or not according to their conscience.” (aspeninstitute.org) This I agree with. My son is agnostic. I want him to be able to make his own choice. We both have two completely different views, but we have the same rights in our country to worship or not. Can you think of a place it doesn’t belong? I would restate that I am not sure pluralism belongs in religion. It depends on what religious pluralism means. Do you think that our government still uses pluralistic principles? While at times it feels like our country is run by Elitism, especially right now. I still have faith that there are so many checks and balances in place that pluralism wins in the end. How did the debate alter your view on that? The debate on if the Electoral college has outlived its usefulness did not alter my view on if I think our government still uses pluralistic principles. The electoral college is part of our checks and balances, and I think it is still essential to our voting process. Did you witness pluralism in Station Eleven or Beauty Salon? Yes, there are a few examples of pluralism in Station Eleven. The traveling symphony is a group of individuals with different backgrounds who share a love of music and theater. They all come together as individuals to do more than just survive but to thrive in the post-pandemic world. Another example is the people at the airport. A very diverse group that sticks together to survive.   References Houdmann, M. (2022 January 4). What is religious pluralism?  http://www.Gotquestions.org Religious Pluralism101. 2019 July 17). http://www.aspeninstitute.org Mandel, E. In your second paragraph, you mention the LGBTQ community and Christians being uncomfortable around places of worship because they are perceived as aliens. It is true that some branches of Christianity do not support or accept the LGBTQ community. I can’t say that they view them as aliens but I do know that those who disapprove use morality and immorality as part of their argument. The part that confuses me is the idea that the LGBTQ community and Christians feel uncomfortable around places of worship. Can you explain? Also, are there other religions that make decisions about acceptance based on morality? I’m also interested in the idea of Christian churches that might allow people of every community to come in but let them know that their behavior prevents them from being full members of the church or eligible for the afterlife. This is something I have witnessed and been aware of and I think it is another example of the many different ways that different branches and churches that identify as part of the Christian faith behave differently when it comes to certain attitudes, behaviors, and communities. Can you tell me about experiences or an experience that has formed your opinion?  And I like the idea you begin with in your third paragraph but as I kept reading I wondered whether or not it’s the government who is not practicing pluralism or if it’s actually the public. What do you think? Is there anything the government can do about the systemic issues you describe or is it up to the people?  And regarding your last paragraph, would pluralism have made a difference in either book? It’s not an easy answer but I’m curious to hear your thoughts. Best, Seth Desiree’s post To be a successful leader you should understand Generational workforce characteristics and recognize potential clash points. By understanding your team you can manage more effectively.  Supervisors will need to encourage younger employees (Gen Z) to learn how to work in a structured workplace. Also, help older employees (Baby Boomer & Gen X) with he changes and upgrades of technology. The supervisor will need to mediate conflicts within a multigenerational workplace by understanding clash points. Supervisors need to be flexible and have an open mind to lead the Baby boomer, Gen X, Gen Y and Gen Z. (2022). Dunn & Haimann’s Healthcare Management Madison’s post In order to be a successful healthcare manager in today’s world, they must be compliant with including workers from multiple generations. This can be extremely difficult as one generation is used to doing it one way while the other likes it a different way. It is important to realize what it takes to help reduce stress within each generation and find common ground in the middle with all parties so nobody is made uncomfortable by a shift in technology or something similar. It is also important to recognize the feelings that each generation differs in, as well as race and ethnicity and make sure all employees are on the same page about being respectful to all races and setting in stone quickly that any type of disrespect towards a specific race will not be tolerated. Finally, it is crucial to make sure that each person has a way they feel comfortable completing their job or having access to different resources needed to ensure their job is done effectively. As an example, as my job we have many different generations working on the afternoon shift. For scheduling, an email, Facebook group chat, and a printed copy is all posted and given out to ensure that each person has access to the schedule and open shifts the way they like and feel comfortable with.    Born from 1925-1945 Silenter-traditionalist  Respectful to authority, and hardworking Values duty and sacrifice values accountability  likes practical experience  Work ethic=timeliness and productivity Strong interpersonal skills and willpower Promotions and recognition come with the job Values academic credentials Accepts limited resources Loyal to employer,  expects loyalty in return   Born from 1946-1964 Baby Boomer Workaholics and competitive   driven by goals for success Work ethic=hours worked vs. monetary rewards Believes in team work Values human relationship building Expects loyalty from coworkers, communicated phone or face-to-face Careers are their identities want a work life balance  Sacrifice for success; motivated by company loyalty duty to their employer    Born from 1965-1980 Gen X “MTV Generation” Self-reliant, work hard play hard  Values control over his/her life wants a work-life balance  Believes in production  Most loyal employees Ethnically diverse Wants open communication Values control of his or her time resistant to change Invest loyalty in a person not an organization Risk averse Highly educated   Born from 1981-1996 Gen Y- Millennial Image conscious and competitive  Needs feedback and reinforcement Values instant gratification Changes job often Team oriented Wants communications usually via cell phone or email  Searches for others to help achieve his/her goals Desires a  job that provides personal fulfillment and development Searches for ways to reduce stress Racial and ethnic identification is less important   Born from 1997-2010 Gen Z-“iGeneration” Independent Values and mobilizes around causes, including global Seeks recognition for work well done prefers autonomy  Gender and ethnicity indifferent  Wants face to face communication but is attached to social media Tech savvy Doesn’t see price value of formal education Focuses on job and financial security Pragmatic and analytical       Dunn, R. (2022). Dunn & Haimann’s Healthcare Management. Health Administration Press.  Professor’s post ( Questions for me) Thank you Genesis, Describe any positive reactions you may have experienced in one of your performance appraisals? What was it based on? John Meaghan’s post Per Dunn and Haimann there are two types of motivational theory. One being Content Theory (Need Theory): Is the theory that individuals are motivated by needs. The other one being Process Theory: is the theory that individuals are motivated by equity and expectancy. They desire equal compensation and treatment (equity) and expect to be rewarded for their effort (expectancy). I don’t think that I can pick just one. I think for a place too be successful they would use both motivational theories. For Content theory or need theory there is a need for anything required, desired, considered useful for obtaining an item, feeling, and status etc. (Dunn, 2021). With that being said, Employers need people to work and want to work, and employees need money to get things and further education this is just an example. If you look at Maslow’s Hierarchy of Needs you can see that the two top brackets self-fulfillment, achieving potential and self-image, achievement, and competence. In healthcare you work as a team in every department because you have patients counting on the team of people to take care of them. Helping save lives everyday is a self image, achievement, and self fulfillment. Then you have process theory which I think is more about behavior. You do need to act a certain or professional way to have the outcome or goals you desire to get done. If you want to be in management you have to know how to react to things and keep your behavior professional at all times. You also have to show you are a hard worker, reliable, consistent. I think showing you are a well mannered and behaved person who can get the job done shows you get should get equity and expectancy. I really do think needs and behavior go hand in hand. You need them both to succeed in anything you want to do and for an organization to be successful.    References: Dunn, R. (2022). Dunn & Haimann’s Healthcare Management. Health Administration Press.  Erin’s post Dunn and Haimann  state that while there are “several ways to interpret the concept of motivation; two of the major categories of contemporary motivational theories are content theory and the process theory” (2021)  Content theory is also referred to as need theory and is that an individual’s needs motivate them.  A need can be different things to each individual and can include items, status and feelings.  The other is process theory which evaluates the reason an individual chooses a specific behavior in order to accomplished their intended goal and then assesses their level of satisfaction afterward.  This theory emphasizes that “individuals are motivated by equity and expectancy” (2021).  If employees don’t feel a balance between the effort and the reward then they will not be motivated. I do not think that there is a blanket motivational theory that works for every employee in every circumstance.  There are portions of each theory that are applicable but each may carry more significant weight at certain times.  A balance between aspects of each should be implemented and may need to be utilized differently with each employee.  It is the manager’s responsibility to recognize the need of the individual and to alter the motivational theory as required in order for the employee to reach their full potential.   Reference Dunn, R.
