According to Garner-Wizard (2018), the use of medical marijuana is proven to be associated with many benefits. One form of medical marijuana is an oromucosal spray called Sativex. It is a standardized extract of cannabis flower and leaf with a 1:1 ratio of THC and CBD that is approved in several countries for the treatment of spasticity in multiple sclerosis. Another is a form of synthetic THC that has been proven to treat cancer-related nausea and vomiting and loss of appetite in HIV/AIDS patients called dronabinol. A synthetic cannabinoid comparable to THC called nabilone is also used to treat other various side effects of chemotherapy. In addition, CBD has been approved in some US states for epilepsy, HIV/AIDS, amyotrophic lateral sclerosis (ALS), cancer, cancer-related pain, nausea, or cachexia (body weakening/wasting common in patients with chronic illness), Crohn’s disease, MS, and Parkinson’s disease (Garner-Wizard, 2018).
