Chapter 14 made me stop and reflect on how I can live my life with more creativity in it. One piece of advice that is relevant to me at this time in my life is to wake up in the morning with a specific goal to look forward to. I think this really speaks to me as a college student because there are days where I just don’t even want to get up because I am drowning from homework and work. I am about two weeks away from graduating with is super exciting to finally be done with school and moving on to the next chapter in my life. Sometime I can do to encourage myself to be more creative is to wake up with a goal to look forward to because every day is a fresh start to be positive. “Creative individuals don’t have to be dragged out of bed; they are eager to start the day. This is not because they are cheerful, enthusiastic types. Nor do they necessarily have something exciting to do. But they believe that there is something meaningful to accomplish each day, and they can’t wait to get started on it.”

The quote in the above paragraph stood out to me personally when reading this chapter because this is something I want to focus on. I am going to tell myself every morning when my alarm goes off that there is something I will discover today that is worth waking up for, which will hopefully make me more of a morning person. Little things in life really go a long ways. I would have never thought that just waking up in the morning with a goal in mind leads to creativity. I have learned so much about what creativity really is throughout this semester. Coming into class on the first day, I thought creativity was mostly being artsy. I have learned it is so much more than that. I use to view myself as not a creative person, but now I am starting to think I am creative afterall. My views on creativity have changed drastically over the past 14 weeks or so.
Another piece of advice from the chapter that is relevant to me is start doing more of what you love and less of what you hate. I think this is huge in life because if you are spending time doing something you hate, then you probably have a bad attitude about it. For example, jobs are a big part of life; therefore, choosing a career that you love is best. I am going to be an Elementary school teacher someday, and I know this isn’t the best paying job out there, but it’s something I love to do. I would much rather live my life happy than hate going to work every day because I don’t like my job. Life is too short to live unhappy. I feel like some people choose a job just because it pays nice, but money isn’t everything. I believe being with people you love and who make you happy is the most important part of life. In the long run, money won’t be worth it because you can’t bring money to the grave with you when you pass.
“Life is nothing more than a stream of experiences- the more widely you swim in it, the richer your life will be.” I love this quote on page 147 because I believe experiences are a great part of life. Experiences expand knowledge and views, which help create creativity in oneself. Whenever I get the chance to go somewhere new, I take the opportunity. I love to travel and see other parts of the world because I learn so much from these kinds of opportunities. I think this also goes with trying new things. For example, instead of eating at the same restaurant when I go out to eat, I try a new place each time. Being open to all views and opinions makes a well-rounded person, which is the kind of person I strive to be. I need to be able to connect with all of my students as a teacher, so I am starting now. Just because someone may be different than you, doesn’t make them any better.
Throughout this semester, I have grown as a creative person and have cultivated my own creativity. Coming into the semester, I didn’t view myself as a creative person. I wasn’t good at art; therefore, I thought I wasn’t creative. This view has changed drastically because now I know that creativity is much more than knowing how to draw, paint, etc. This course has contributed to finding meaning in my life because I have learned what creativity really is and ways to become more creative in my life. I think being creative makes you a happier person overall. Being able to wake up each morning with a smile on my face with a goal in mind that I will accomplish something today is inspiring. The chapter also talked about making time for reflection and relaxation. This is another piece of advice that I am going to follow through with because I find it important.
Being a reflective on life is crucial to growing and developing as a creative person. This is something I have already started doing and will continue throughout life. As a teacher, I will be reflecting on my teaching on a daily basis. I will also reflect on how my lesson plans turn out. If something go as I thought it would, then I can change it for the next time. This is why reflecting is so important because you can change what needs to be improved. “It is important to schedule times in the day, the week, and the year just to take stock of your life and review what you have accomplished and what remains to be done.” I love this quote because I think sometimes people get caught up in life that they just need to take a second and take a breath.
Overall, this course was great! I feel like I have learned a lot about creativity through the readings. Being able to read my classmates posts is beneficial to see how others think about the readings. Different parts of the readings stand out to different people, so it’s nice to be able to see what other people think. I like how we are able to write on what stood out to us. When I am required to write about a certain topic then I feel as if I am not getting the most out of the reading because I am focused on finding information about that certain topic. I also liked how we are not graded on grammar, sentence structure, ect because then I can focus on getting my ideas and thoughts down without worrying about anything else. I have found that once I start writing, I begin to drift off in ways I didn’t think I would go, but this shows I am being open and creative with my thinking.
