Subject of Comparison Paper

Students will collect different forms of media to compare for the purpose of creating a better understanding of mass communication. The comparison paper will include a comparison of three types, including a comparison of local and national coverage of the same topic, or story in mass media; television news and print news coverage of the same story; and a feature interview article versus a news article of similar topics. The writing should align with discussions and readings covered in COM 100, including the proper use of terms from the textbook.

Aspects of the Comparison Paper

• Introduction (Include a preview of the rest of the paper.)
• Three sections of comparison content with the headers: National vs. Local; Television vs. Print; and Feature vs. News.
• Conclusion with the writer’s thoughts on the three comparison sections.
• References: The textbook must be a reference, along with citing at least six media sources that are compared.
• Length: 4-5 pages, but do not exceed 5 pages. This is not including the references.
• Double-spaced, one-inch margins, Times New Roman, and 12 point font.
• Use APA Style, with no cover page.

• Use a thoughtful structure that guides the reader through the text.
• The main point must be evident throughout the paper.
• Research and use intriguing journalism in the comparisons.
• Create an interesting introduction, along with a satisfying conclusion.

Grading

The final paper will be graded based on accuracy, clarity, organization, and adequate sourcing.

• “A” work clearly includes comparisons of local and national coverage of the same topic, or story in mass media; television news and print news coverage of the same story; and a feature interview article versus a news article of similar topics. The writing aligns with discussions and readings covered in COM 100, including the proper use of terms from the textbook.The writing is concise and is free from errors.
• “B” work requires more than minor reorganization or fails to adequately compare the required items.
• “C” work requires major reorganization, and includes noticeable errors.
• “D” work has excessive organizational problems and numerous errors and fails to include one of the required sections.
• “F” work has significant organizational problems or errors and fails to include more than one of the required sections.
