Running Head: HOLISTIC CARE PHILOSOPHY 0 Holistic Care Philosophy Tanyanika McMillian South University Holistic care philosophy To offer holistic nursing care, a nurse should first develop a therapeutic care plan to determine the past and current health status along with the current needs of the patient. This paper presents the past and current health status, current concerns and coping patterns, and the emotional, physical, mental and spiritual needs of a family member whose initials are R.M and aged 55 years old. Past and present health status The patient was diagnosed with diabetes type 2 when he was 42 years old. With this types of diabetes, the body cells become resistant to the processes of insulin and the producing organ, does not produce enough insulin to overcome this resistance. Since the sugar is not transferred into the body cells, it accumulates in the blood resulting in increased blood sugars. The present health status is that the client is living with diabetes and suffering from the loss of vision caused by diabetes. The loss of visions occurs due to the changes of blood vessels in the retina part of the eyes, which is the part that reads images. The patient also suffers general body weakness and loss of weight. Present concerns The current concerns of this patient are to identify the best ways to manage the condition and prevent the occurrence of other complications associated with diabetes. Some of these complications include heart diseases and stroke, kidney disease, damage to the body nerves, amputations and skin conditions. Past and present coping patterns Coping with the situation has been a challenge for the patient. Although it was tough at first, the client started by coping emotionally and did well to avoid anxiety and depression. However, depression affected him for a very long time, but he was later able to overcome it. Other past coping patterns include seeking treatment for the minor ailments, making lifestyle changes, eating healthy foods and being in a good mental health. The current coping patterns include living a healthy lifestyle, exercising physically on a regular basis, being in a good mental state, foot care, and regular eye tests. Healing beliefs The patient understands that diabetes is a lifetime disease and he has accepted his condition. He believes that he cannot be healed, but he can live a comfortable life with the disease without suffering from its complications. Health values The patient believes that having good health should be a priority in life and it is important to seek medical attention when one suffers from an illness. Social support The patient has been receiving good social support from his family, which made several lifestyle modifications to fit his requirements. The family has helped him in his coping patterns. The patient is also a member of a support group of other people living with diabetes. Religious/spiritual practices The patient is a Christian, and he states that he is strong. He also attends church regularly and believes his faith in God have contributed to his being in good health despite living with diabetes for several years. Patient’s personal health goals The objective of the patient is to adhere to all the recommendations from his physician in controlling the effects of the disease. He aims at preventing himself from suffering from other complications. Summary The physical state of the patient is good because he is coping well with the condition and he has a good mental state due to his acceptance of his condition. The patient also does well emotionally though he has reoccurrences of emotional breakdowns especially when he is weak. He is also doing well spiritual due to his involvement in his faith.
