An adolescent dealing with depression is a serious issue especially in today’s society. It affects how they feel and behave. They can be in a constant state of sadness and loss interest in activities and academics. Adolescents today deal with body changes, peer pressure at school and social media, and academic stressors. Some common emotion signs are feelings of worthlessness, lack of participation in activities, withdrawn, anger, and easily frustrated. They also could have lack of appetite, change in sleep patterns, suffer academically, and self harm. If they do not get treatment it could lead to alcohol and drug use to cope and suicide.  Primary prevention could be screening for depression. It can be hard to tell between depression and normal changes of a teenager so screening is a good tool to use. Secondary prevention is counseling options and some medication regiments to help them cope with the depression in healthy ways. Tertiary prevention would be inpatient care especially when suicide is contemplated. (Teen Depression, 2015). Locally in the area we have a program called “Need a Lighthouse” and its goal is to provide support and education on teen depression. There are different resources including support groups and inpatient facilities depending on situation. Virginia Department of Behavioral Health is also on their site resources and it is a regional option for support and education links for depression. A nurse is usually the first encounter the patient  and the assessment on mental health and looking for signs and symptoms are important. Nurses have to be there to listen and be a judgment free zone for them to feel comfortable.  (I Need a Lighthouse, 2015).
