C.With majority of the answers I would think that a lot more would change, but honestly it is the same with majority so the standout I took was back then the people actually cared to see everyone be successful. The people would go through so much and it would take even more to break down what is being reached. Also they did not believe in quitting no matter how long the process.

Interviewee Information:

Name: “Sig” is the pseudonym he asked me to use. It was one of his favorite uncle’s names.

Age: 81 (When I asked his age, he said 82, then immediately said “Wait! I am still 81 until next month, so let’s not rush it!”)

Gender: Male

Occupation: Retired electrician

Living/Familial situation: Widower. Lives alone, however, he has a tenant/friend that rents a small studio apartment that is connected to his garage.

Questions:

What was it like for you growing up?

He said he had a real good childhood. He said that he alternated between living with his parents and his grandparents, though that was mostly throughout the summers.

What do you remember most about your childhood?

“I guess I would say when I stayed summers with my grandparents, since I stayed there quite a bit. They had a farm with chickens, ducks, pigs, cows, and donkeys.”

What is the secret to long life?

At this he laughed and said there isn’t really a secret, but then after a few seconds of thinking about it, he changed his answer, “I guess I would have to say religious beliefs.”

What do you like most and least about getting older?

Most – “I can fellowship with all the family I have. Also, the more I see, the more I know!”

Least – To this question he chuckled loudly and said, “All the aches and pains you get when you get older!”

What would you change about the world today?

He did not even hesitate, “I would like to see a lot more peace.”

What advice do you have for someone who is in their youth today?

He thought hard about this, then said “Attempt to spend more time with your loved ones, because you will miss them one day.” This made us both get emotional and cry. My mom (his wife) passed away unexpectedly four years ago.

What was the happiest time in your life?

When his daughter was born. (She is 55 years old)

Looking back on your life, what do you regret most?

He said he regretted not spending more time with his family. When I asked him to elaborate, if perhaps it was due to work, he said no, that it was just “being dumb! Not doing it and I could have!”

What makes you the most proud?

He was most proud of getting an education and that he was able to support his family without a lot of worries.

How do you want to be remembered?

“As a loving person.”

How do you believe you will be remembered?

He starts laughing again and says, “Depends on whose memory I’m in! Really though, I think I will be remembered as a loving and caring person. More so caring, I think.”

Reflect on the interview. What did you learn? What thoughts did you have while you conducted this interview? How was it exactly what you expected or different from what you expected?

“Sig” is my stepdad. He has been a widow for just over four years. And although he is almost 82 years old, he still has strong cognitive skills which permit him to live alone and drive. He is in pretty good overall health as he does not suffer from cardiovascular issues or diabetes, although he is obese. Due to this, he does suffer from chronic back pain. I learned a lot about Sig’s childhood throughout the interview. I was not aware that he had to live with his grandparents on and off during his youth. It was nice to hear him reflect on that time with so much appreciation, even though it was not by choice. His eagerness to do the interview also took me by surprise as he isn’t exactly a loquacious person. The interview was quite emotional for both of us at times, but I did my best to control my emotions so that he could answer freely and without worry. Overall, I enjoyed conducting this interview. It allowed me an opportunity to see a different side of my stepdad by asking him questions that I would normally not consider asking.
